What is the purpose of the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ?

The word incarnation refers to the event in history whereby the Lord Jesus Christ took on the flesh (John 1:14) of humanity so He can ultimately go to the cross to pay for our sins and bridge the gap between sinful humanity and a Holy God.  This is one of the main purposes of Jesus being born (Philippians 2: 5-11).
