The Purposes of the Incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ

The Bible makes it very clear that the Messiah, who is Jesus Christ, had to be born in the flesh so that He could accomplish salvation for humanity (Philippians 2: 5-11; Galatians 4:4-5; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Isaiah 53:5-6).

Without Him coming in the flesh, we would still be condemned in our sins without the opportunity for eternal life (John 14:6; Luke 24: 44-47).

I recently read an article by G. Campbell Morgan entitled "The Purposes of the Incarnation." In the article he gives four good reasons from a theological perspective why Jesus had to come in the flesh (outline created based on his points; the article is found in The Fundamentals, Vol.3):

  • His incarnation reveals the Father

    • John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
    • John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

  • His incarnation was to take away sin

    • 1 John 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
    • Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
    • Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
    • John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

  • His incarnation was to destroy the works of the devil

    • 1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
    • Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

  • His incarnation was to establish an another advent [The Second Coming] of the Kingdom of God in the world.

    • Hebrews 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
    • Acts 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
I hope this was a blessing to you.  I am attaching a link to the Kindle edition of the Fundamentals in case you would like to own a copy of the 4 volume set.
